Navigating your years through college can be hard enough without the pressures of enjoying two different majors and having to narrow it down to walk across that stage. Nina Shortt has experienced this problem as she enjoys both journalism and PR at SJGC.

Personally interested in journalism to hone her love of film and screenwriting, but also loving the mass communications aspect of PR. With the limited pathways available within each major of journalism at SJGC, Shortt thought the best way to get what she wants is to stick with journalism, though she’s never had dreams to do broadcast or anchor.

Loving to talk, have a seat at the table, and lead the planning is what Shortt loves about PR, but drawn to how personable journalism can be. Caught in the middle, Shortt has had difficulties finding her path at J-School and knowing the direction she truly wants to go.

“It’s tricky figuring out what you want to do when there are limited resources,” Shorrt said. “I love a good story, which made me attracted to journalism but I think I love coming up with the stories more because you’re the creator. It’s all in your hands.”

Knowing how difficult it is to choose when it’s your diploma on the line, Shortt continues to do what she loves. Though she can’t do both right now, she’s taking steps to ensure she’s the one in the room creating ideas that end up on screen. While she has to pick one path, that won’t prevent Shortt from learning all she needs to know to get to where she wants to be.
