This story was absolutely riveting. There was romance, heartbreak, loss, and joy all wrapped into one tragic love story. Tia Williams did a great job detailing the trials and tribulations Shane and Eva have gone through since they first met in high school. Eva and Shane have long known each other by the time they meet again in the present, and they are both very popular authors. Tia manages to break our hearts in every way possible during these seven days the book takes place. Wishful thinking, death, grounded daughters, nap cafe dates, author panel events and parties on rooftops,
Tia does everything but gives the readers what they want. Shane and Eva have a twisted history linked to self-harm, abuse, and no goodbyes, and it shows the moment they lay eyes on each other at that panel of authors. Secretly writing to each other through their best-selling novels over the past years, their encounter turns into a sexy, intense moment where their old chemistry fills the air as if it never left all those years ago. As the week goes on, Tia takes us back in time to the week Eva and Shane first met in high school and the timeline of their budding romance while simultaneously telling the story of how their old passion and love for each other hit them full force in their adult life.
This was truly one of the best books I had read in a while, and it made me feel all those emotions I missed feeling when I was so immersed in literature. I felt I was experiencing the story with the characters. This book made my heart hurt and leap with joy, all with the turn of a page. I was entranced with Shane and Eva’s love story and how it grew between them after all those years of unspoken messages to one another through their writing. A huge bonus is that Tia Williams is a black author writing about black authors and their journey with love.
This upcoming February, Tia is releasing another book called A Love Song for Ricki Wilde, where Ricki, who yearns to escape her lavish lifestyle and family riches, moves to a Harlem brownstone basement when she realizes her dreams of opening a flower shop. When one night, Ricki meets a handsome, mysterious stranger who “knocks her world off balance in the most unexpected way.” I’m super excited for this book as I’m ready to see what ride Tia is about to take my heart on. Knowing how she writes, I’m mentally and emotionally preparing myself in advance.
